Has anyone heard of this site? It's like social networking for the blind.

Post 2 by SunshineAndRain (I'm happily married, a mom of two and a fulltime college student.) on Tuesday, 22-Jul-2008 7:05:38

No, but I'm definitely gonna take a look at it. Thanks.

Post 3 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Tuesday, 22-Jul-2008 13:07:46

oooh sounds interesting. Thanks. Think I'll take a look too.

Post 4 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Tuesday, 22-Jul-2008 14:30:31

I just checked it out a few hours ago, as soon as I read this topic. It's pretty cool actually, no Captcha thing to deal with when signing up, and very easy to navigate. I love it so far! *smile* I hope it gets to be popular like other social networking sites.

Post 5 by Albanac (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Monday, 08-Sep-2008 21:09:55

Just signed up with this today and love it. Great features, not the least of which is an anti-harrassing policy as part of the TOS. Very, very nice. If you join, look out for simoncowan, that's me.

Cheers,
Simon

Post 6 by yankee g wolverine (Account disabled) on Monday, 08-Sep-2008 21:22:06

I looked at it, and thought this was an interesting idea. I joined it thinking the same. However...I hate it. It's just sheltering the blind people, which annoys me greatly, it's got good features, true, but at the same time, it's got too much baggage

Post 7 by maroon five (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Monday, 08-Sep-2008 21:47:02

i joind it, cause i thought it'd be something different. after looking around though, i hated it. it's okay if you want that sort of thing, but i certainly won't be loging in anytime soon again. it's to.......sheltered for my liking, and reminds me of myspace.

Post 8 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Tuesday, 09-Sep-2008 5:49:33

Myspace with less clutter. I don't get it. I sined up, but I don't even remember the registration form asking me for a username and password. I can't log in to my account.

Post 9 by Big Pawed Bear (letting his paws be his guide.) on Tuesday, 09-Sep-2008 6:01:31

i looked at this blink nation thing, and thought it was just another version of what we already have here. so not signing up to it.

Post 10 by yankee g wolverine (Account disabled) on Tuesday, 09-Sep-2008 6:49:57

no, what we've got here is a comunity of blind and sighted people. Mostly blind, yes, it's sprinkled in here and there though. This blinkNation is a cult of blindies, as far as I can tell.

Post 11 by maroon five (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Tuesday, 09-Sep-2008 7:10:06

lol Garret. wrong box? anyway, blink nation is only designed for blindy's. i mean. look at some of the headings. one fore example; "blind frendly vidios", now, you tell me where that caters for sighted people as well. yeah, sure, they designed it so we can use the thing better, but, unlike here, that sight is definitly not sight person friendly, and i mean fully sighted, no screen reader sighted people. i showed my brother in law this sight, then blink nation, and he for the life of him couldn't understand blink nation's layout. now, he's a computer guy, so that should tell you something. he even told me that it reminds him of myspace.

Post 12 by Big Pawed Bear (letting his paws be his guide.) on Tuesday, 09-Sep-2008 8:09:39

anyway, i'm not signing up, there's something about that site i don't like. hmm. can't put my paw on it at the moment, but,,,

Post 13 by KC8PNL (The best criticism of the bad is the practice of the better.) on Tuesday, 09-Sep-2008 9:00:06

This site looks like it could be up for a lawsuit at some point, since they have taken some of the facebook things such as the wall, and pretty much just copied them. Further, I know that many people recieved unsolicited invitations to join the site. I don't know how exactly it happened, other than someone associated with blink nation has access to a large amount of email addresses obtained from a few email lists. Sorry, but spamming people is not a very effective way to build up a large user base that respects you. I would say that is a key difference between this site and that one. We've never sent out spam messages inviting users to join. This site has grown in to what it is due to word of mouth. Granted, I don't agree with all that goes on here, but that's what makes life what it is, and what keeps things interesting. The only cool thing I have found on the site is the ability to upload files and hare them with others. We considered doing that on here at one point when we first introduced premium memberships, but didn't proceed with the idea due to copyright infringement risks.

Post 14 by soaring eagle (flying high again!) on Tuesday, 09-Sep-2008 9:17:50

I signed up for the sight after a couple of friends invited me. I find it confusing. And is it wrong for blind people to just hang with each other if that is what they choose? Personally I like meeting many people but maybe others don't feel that comfortable? Just wondering.

Post 15 by yankee g wolverine (Account disabled) on Tuesday, 09-Sep-2008 11:03:06

blind people are way too sheltered. They for some reason want to be with only each other and Ib don't get it.
Any CL...please delete a post, my lack of box recently shouldn't make that accidental post. lol

Post 16 by KC8PNL (The best criticism of the bad is the practice of the better.) on Tuesday, 09-Sep-2008 11:09:08

Antiharrassment polacy? Maybe they should have taken their own polacy in to account before they spammed a bunch of people. A bit hypocritical, wouldn't you say?

Post 17 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Tuesday, 09-Sep-2008 17:55:17

I signed up, and haven't logged in since then.

Post 18 by maroon five (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Tuesday, 09-Sep-2008 23:03:55

i only signed up after someone said something in publics, but have only gone back once to show a fully sighted person.

Post 19 by purple penguin (Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.) on Tuesday, 09-Sep-2008 23:13:50

Who are the sighted people on here?
Saying that blind people are sheltered is generalizing a bit. don't you think? If you say that then you are including yourself in that category.

Post 20 by south park fan (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 2:14:56

Blink Nation is an easy site to navigate. I recently signed up and I like it. They recently added chat rooms. I tried them and found them to be a bit weird. When you go in to a chat room, it doesn't open in a new window but I discovered a link that lets you open the chat room in a new window. I'll have to try it that way and see how I like it.

Post 21 by yankee g wolverine (Account disabled) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 3:38:28

didn't I say that it was most blind people? I thought I did, but perhaps I didn't.

Garret i think the reference is your post 15.

Post 24 by Thunderstorm (HotIndian!) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 4:51:33

I have also signed into that site. but since I happened to see the same members there again, I've dropped the idea of logging in again.

I want a new site with a new bunch of people. y'all gotten bored to me though.

Let me find out a new site with new bunch of people and new ffr as well. lmao.

Post 27 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 6:05:19

I'm still unable to sign in, since I've created my account. Where, on the registration form, does it ask for a username and password? I don't get it ...

Post 28 by maroon five (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 6:55:00

Joanne, where it says log in. you don't put your name, you put yor username in their, then tab to the next box and it should say pass word.

Post 29 by south park fan (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 15:51:54

When you register, it does ask you to create a username and password. I'm not sure how you missed it. It is clearly marked.

Post 30 by The Great Rabbit (Queen of random) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 19:31:14

lol Raajan does have a good point though. i've noticed on a lot of stuff like email lists and websites for the blind that its a lot of the same people on all of them, so it does get kind of old. not saying all of them are like tha but a lot of times someone finds out about a new site and tells a bunch of people and then they all join and it all kind of gets to be the same people everywhere.

Post 31 by maroon five (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 20:16:36

i think she meant when she logs in, not when signing up.

Post 32 by PorkInCider (Wind assisted.) on Wednesday, 10-Sep-2008 21:11:50

I hate the navigation system on there, I don't like drop down menus when a list view would serve much better, visited links, and jump by list and list item are far easier than turning forms mode/browse mode on and off all the time to do different things.

Post 33 by south park fan (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 11:24:04

Kevin, what is so damn hard about turning forms mode on? Its not a big deal. You just have to get use to the way the menus are set up on the site.

Post 34 by Brooke (I just keep on posting!) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 12:59:06

I actually like the navigation system over there. It took me a second to get used to it, but now that I did, I think it's easier.

Raaj, when you find a new site, be sure to let us all know so we can stalk you over there and fill that place up with the same people too!

Post 35 by changedheart421 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 16:59:36

can anyone know how to get my password? I forgot it on the site.

Post 36 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 17:41:37

U have to email them, another thing I don't like.

Post 37 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 17:42:22

Whoops sorry, that's a different site. Blinknation, i'm not sure of. Sorry again.

Post 38 by jess (Generic Zoner) on Thursday, 11-Sep-2008 22:28:22

Hi! I also joined blinknation, and enjoy it.

Post 39 by PorkInCider (Wind assisted.) on Friday, 12-Sep-2008 7:53:18

urm, I don't believe i said there was anything difficult about turning it on or off, just that I personally think that visited links and list views are faster and easier to navigat not having to turn it on and off. simply an opinion.

Post 40 by rdfreak (THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE-BLUE KANGA-KICKIN AUSIE) on Saturday, 13-Sep-2008 8:56:40

I'm with Kev on this one; I hate the dropdown menus. if people can get on to the site, surely they can more easily and quickly click on a link etc.

Post 41 by louisa (move over school!) on Sunday, 21-Sep-2008 9:06:49

I signed up on blink nation. Then forgot my password. I didn't like the drop down menues so much. Prefer the links system.

Post 42 by changedheart421 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 21-Sep-2008 9:50:53

ok emailed them twice never got a response. so personally screw that site.

Post 43 by Marissapc2010 (Zone BBS is my Life) on Monday, 06-Oct-2008 14:44:29

I actually like blinknation. I like the combo boxes and stuff. I think its kind of cool. but you guys are right. its the same people everywhere. I'm ready for some new ones. lol. The sight is ok though. The wall thing is kind of cool. even though it is coppied from facebook.

Post 44 by Juliet (move over school!) on Tuesday, 07-Oct-2008 16:55:41

I signed up for it a while back just to see what all the hype was about, but didn't find it to be too different than facebook, so when I go on it, I don't usually stay there long. However, I'm really becoming bored with both of them, and now that facebook has become even less accessible and more frustrating to try to use sense they've changed the layout, I go on it long enough to see what my friends have been doing, and to check on what groups I've joined, and leave.

Post 45 by Marissapc2010 (Zone BBS is my Life) on Tuesday, 07-Oct-2008 19:07:14

I'm not on long either. there isn't to much to do and there isn't usually a lot of people in the chat but, maybe if it becomes more popular and grows some it will be cooler. But I think its good for a start.

Post 46 by The Elemental Dragon (queen of dragons) on Wednesday, 08-Oct-2008 14:31:47

they've also got a thing for games, but only have one, which I think could of been done better. or get new games for it or something. it's good, but a bit on the boring side. there are no applications or anything, and the chat is waaaay too dead.

Post 47 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 09-Oct-2008 0:23:25

Hi, all. I signed up for Blinknation when a friend told me about it. I am not at all impressed. Like Kevin and Rdfreak have said, the navigation system sucks. It's not hard, persay, but it is annoying to me. Links are better. I like Facebook, Myspace, and here for my social networking.

Post 48 by The Elemental Dragon (queen of dragons) on Thursday, 09-Oct-2008 3:05:21

facebook was good till they changed the layout, personally I'll be happy once they deside weather or not to put the old FB layout back as an option. they had it for a while, but then force everyone to use the new one. which I think is really unfair. the links werebetter, they had everything in headings and I just prefer it. so for now I'll take blinknation over facebook. but I'm still as others have said, not impressed with it.

Post 49 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Thursday, 09-Oct-2008 5:24:35

same here, i do prefer the links. :). 1 thing good about blink nation i find is the video uploading, and the video search function. i also like the chat system, and the forums. :). again, not as good as facebook, and it's got a long way to go. but given time...

Post 50 by KonaLee (Newborn Zoner) on Tuesday, 04-Nov-2008 18:26:52

I think given time, BlinkNation will get better. Not over-joyed with the combo boxes and the game, well, its not much fun but I have met lots of people on there. Everyone I've met there seems to be real nice. It definitely is not a site that I spend lots of time on. I wish MySpace would make some adjustments regarding that damn visual varification thing because I got tired of not being able to post comments to people's pages if I didn't have a sighted person around. I may have to set up another page so I can pal with my sighted friends and family though.

Post 51 by YankeeFanForLife! (Picapiedra: king of the boards!) on Wednesday, 05-Nov-2008 1:11:32

Yeah have an account on that crap, but can't not get on it at all.
Sent them an e-mail, but they never got back. So fuck it!

Post 52 by Godzilla-On-Toast (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Wednesday, 05-Nov-2008 2:18:33

I admit I'm not one who is into live chatting at all, which is probably totally against what social networking sites are all about. I'm horrible at smalltalk and find it boring. But I honestly don't mind the interface and I like their Youtube search because it doesn't make Jaws lag or lose focus like a lot of Flash sites do. I bet I'd need to understand programming to understand how they did that. I've got a blog over there which I need to update, because my Livejournal one still takes priority. But I think it's a cool concept, because I've honestly gone to both MySpace and Facebook sites nad I find MySpace to be so cluttered with all thsi stuff, and I guess now the new version of FaceBook is not as accessible as it was. But then, I'm also on Klango which also has a number of features I like.

Post 53 by purple penguin (Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.) on Tuesday, 11-Nov-2008 18:04:35

Asuming you haven't deleted your cookies, you can log in by simply hitting the go button under sight navigation.

Post 54 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Wednesday, 12-Nov-2008 10:21:45

I'm with darkwing on this one, I liked the old layout of facebook better, but the new one isn't too bad, once u get used to it. I doubt that myspace will ever get the captchas fixed, and about the comuster service, don't bet on getting a replyn anytime soon. I emailed them about their catchas, and i got some crap back from them about how they are going to get it fixed. In teh end, I wanted to try out web vissum, and it got past the captcha for signing up, have you tried that to get past them? That may help. If not, I'd suggest facebook, you have to solve one for signing up, then give them your cell phone number, and they'll send you a text message, you get the code from it, and that makes all of them stop.

Post 55 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 13-Nov-2008 8:31:06

I think this has been mentioned on this board before, but I'm not sure. Yesterday, two of my friends, who had never even heard of Blink Nation, got emails from them asking them to sign up. How is Blink Nation getting a hold of people's email addresses? This isn't the first time I've heard of this happening with them.

Post 56 by Striker (Consider your self warned, i'm creative and offensive like handicap porn.) on Thursday, 13-Nov-2008 10:52:06

yeh, its a little annoying that they don't adhere to there own policies.
and shit, on the subject of law suits, they already have members uplodeing coppywrited files into there uploder so yeh. they're fucked if the sight gets popular enough for the RIA or anyone like that to notice.
On the hole, I find the sight ok, give it a 5 out of 10. its functional but dull in many ways...
but honestly, it is somewhat sheltered and I like LJ Better for blogging and facebook better for social networking.

Post 57 by Godzilla-On-Toast (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 13-Nov-2008 13:57:26

In the case of the first run of spamming, it was not done officially by the site, such as a site admin or whatever, but I suppose somebody who was just a member must have gotten the bright idea they'd do the site owners a favor and try to drum up members. This could be the case again, else it could be somebody seeking to have the site shut down. The site is now down, so somebody got their wish. Oh well, fun while it lasted and all that.

Post 58 by purple penguin (Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.) on Thursday, 13-Nov-2008 18:53:33

Why did all those people decide to sign up when they got the e-mail? I usually ignore any invitations like those, and if I wanted to I can sign up later.

Post 59 by YankeeFanForLife! (Picapiedra: king of the boards!) on Thursday, 13-Nov-2008 22:51:52

But na, I am not able to get on at all, bc my comp picked up a virus. So there for I had to start from scratch.

Post 60 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 14-Nov-2008 0:38:14

Wow, I didn't know the site was down. Well, I can't say I'm too sorry to hear that. And no, my friends didn't sign up when they got the invitation. They were just confused where Blink Nation got their email addresses to send them the invites in the first place.

Post 61 by maroon five (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Friday, 14-Nov-2008 16:08:32

i kno a lot of people who just wanted to have a look at the sight, so signed up to do that, but, decided that it wasn't worth it so didn't go back.

Post 62 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Sunday, 16-Nov-2008 10:57:10

I'm not surprised the site went down, nor did I know. lol. I'm not a bit sad about it either. I heard about it from a few people here, decided to join so I wouldn't be left out, and I've logged in once. I intentionally forgot my username and password. I'd say the only thing I liked about that site was the layout, although I still like the layout of this site better anyway. I think it's a sad excuse for a blind MySpace/FaceBook. O well. Who am I to talk? I don't even like FaceBook or MySpace, so there you go.

Post 63 by Sutty_P (scratching my ass) on Monday, 17-Nov-2008 10:34:13

personally i thought that blinknation was gay. I am glad that it has gone down, just my opinion. lol

Post 64 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 24-Jan-2009 10:20:26

I never even knew that the site was shut down for a time. I used to be a member, but apparently I've been removed. It didn't bother me too much being that I had forgotten my password and at the time there was almost no way of getting that information or going thru anything to change it. However, now that I want to register again, I need an invite from another user of Blink Nation. I actually like that it's not like any of the other popular sites like Myspace, as it's much much easier to navigate, while still having similar features. Aside from being willing to invite other people to it if they were interested, I'd likely use it more since the features are more easier and quicker to get to and use.
Anyway, if anyone who uses Blink Nation will send me an invite, I'd really appreciate it. You can PM me on here, and if you need my email, I can give that to you thru that. Thanks in advance.

Post 65 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 24-Jan-2009 16:53:36

Hey again. Sorry to bring this back up *smile*. I figured it out. My account is still there after all. And it turned out that when you go to the page where you can get a new password, it says to type in your user name. But if you don't remember that, you can also type in your email address and it'll send you a temperary password. So yeah. I'm back on.

Post 66 by YankeeFanForLife! (Picapiedra: king of the boards!) on Saturday, 24-Jan-2009 17:01:58

Post 67 by Godzilla-On-Toast (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Wednesday, 28-Jan-2009 15:12:56

For those of you who dislike the drop-down menus, there's an option to turn those off so you have conventional links.

Post 68 by Click_Clash (No Average Angel) on Wednesday, 28-Jan-2009 20:48:24

I also would appreciate an invite to Blinknation very much. As Princess Lilani said, just PM me and I'll give you my e-mail address.

I created this 2 years ago, and people are still bringing it up?
With that out of the way, It would be nice if they gave us an update on rather or not the site will be back up, or turning into cyberdust.
